A glimpse of hope for a struggling mother
Written by Crosspoint Church team
Imagine being a parent and having to flee your home but due to continual bombings not being able to have your family leave together. Or a imagine being a playful child who dreams of becoming more then having to abandon everything and everyone you’ve known. The Genocide in Sudan forced a family to separate and do just that.
Meet Sumea, a mother of seven.
Due to a bombing raid in Sudan their home caught fire, burning almost all their belongings including important family documents. Because of this, Sumea had to flee to Northern Africa with only half of her family. Sumea fled with her four youngest children; Happy, Iba, Nesma, and Hana. Her three eldest children and husband are still behind in war torn Sudan, desperately trying to reunite with the rest of their family in North Africa.
Sumea works sporadically cleaning homes which barely covers basic living essentials. All four children have big dreams of education and getting into careers that care for and give back to others. Nesma, age 11, hopes to be an engineer. Hana, age 7, dreams of being a pilot. Iba, 9, wants to be a teacher. And Happy, 13, wants to turn her love of math into a career in engineering as well.
Sumea works hard to keep her family’s place a home but the apartment they share has no furniture—no chairs, no tables, no sofa…not even a proper mattress to rest their heads. All four children share one bedroom, one mat and blanket on the floor, a suitcase of belongings tucked in the corner.
The apartment has one bathroom with a broken toilet. Beside the toilet is a bucket for washing and cleansing. Sumea showed us her kitchen where she cooks all their meals on a broken hot plate. There was no stove, no microwave, and no refrigerator, no proper sink and no cabinets. Past the kitchen is Sumea’s room. There she sleeps on a blanket on the ground. In the corner we noticed one suitcase that held what was left of the family’s belongings from their life in Sudan.
The family spirit is far from empty!
Looking around the apartment you see despair and emptiness. But this family’s spirit is far from empty! We had an amazing opportunity to play and pray with the children. Sumea hugged us all and thanked us for visiting their home.
We are so inspired by her courage and hope for her children. We also couldn’t help but be inspired by the passion of Jesus found in Sumea’s prayers and the children’s smiles.
Their situation may seem despairing, but there is hope for them.
