We are developing models and projects to provide refugees and marginalised communities with a self sustainable income. These projects are of genuine help and can even be easily multiplied.

Below you can find a model which has the potential to create a self sustainable support for many refugees and the poor communities in North Africa and Middle East:

Cultivating vegetables with 90% less water

The Global Garden is a system which makes cultivating vegetables possible with hardly any water and without any soil. In many regions of the earth, it is difficult to cultivate good vegetables due to lack of water and bad soil. The salinisation of the farmland is another serious problem. Solutions must be found by all means necessary in order to assure the sustenance of the population.

With the innovative concept of the Global Garden, it is possible to cultivate vegetables entirely free of soil. And compared to traditional cultivation methods, the Global Garden requires up to 90% less water. With this criteria in mind, the Global Garden is ideally qualified for regions where there is not much water or where water is very expensive.

The model of the Global Garden is easy to replicate and can offer a source of income for refugees and underprivileged families. At the same time, they make a good contribution to their surroundings by cultivating vegetables.

AN INNOVATIVE CONCEPT

The Global Garden is a new kind of greenhouse, where vegetables of good quality can grow without soil in an extremely water-efficient way. It uses a concept of cultivation which combines vegetable growing and fish farming, called aquaponics.

Aquaponics – how does It work?

Aquaponics is a method combining the cultivation of vegetables with fish farming. A closed circuit of water and nutrients are at work. This means that the excrements of the fish supply the nutrients for the plants' growth and the plants, in turn, clean the water for the fish. In the Global Garden, two different systems of aquaponics are used: hydroponics and aeroponics.

Hydroponics

Hydroponics is an aquaponics system where the plants root in an inorganic substratum. The young plants are planted into baskets with substratum standing in pipes or basins. A pump provides a regular supply of water from the fish basin, and the overflow leads back to the fish basin. Hydroponics is a very simple system, with water savings of 80%, as compared to the traditional cultivation of vegetables.

Aeroponics

Aeroponics is a system in which the roots of the plants hang free and are sprinkled with water at regular intervals. The young plants are set into a supporting board with holes. Through regular sprinkling, the continuous provision with water and nutrients is ensured. Because of the sprinkling system, aeroponics, as compared to hydroponics, is a little more complex, but it saves up to 90% of water, compared to traditional vegetable cultivation. It also saves a lot of space!

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES of Global garden?

    •    Cultivating vegetables with up to 90% less water.

    •    No soil is needed for cultivating vegetables, but the plants still get all the important nutrients.

    •    The Global Garden needs no pesticides, no weed killers and no chemical fertilizers.

    •    With the Global Garden, it is possible to achieve a fivefold higher yield on the same ground.

    •    This method of cultivating vegetables produces fish for nourishment at the same time.

GREENHOUSE DOME

The round structure makes the dome of the Global Garden very solid and resistant. Also, the dome is simple to set up. A few people can rig up the dome in only two days after preparing the ground.

A dome with the diameter of 20 metres covers more than 300 m2. More domes can be added and connected by passageways. Different dome covers provide the desired climate inside. The temperature inside can be adjusted through a suitable dome cover, as needed in each particular region.

OUR INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS

We work together with local and international partners. It is our aim to train and equip the local people so that they are able to run the Global Garden independently and under local leadership. We will teach them to implement what they have learnt, to pass on their knowledge and to multiply the concept by independently setting up further projects.
